UN Accuses Sheikh Hasina’s Government in Bangladesh of Involvement in Violent Protests and Crimes Against Humanity

UN Condemns Ousted Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina’s Government for Violence and Crimes Against Humanity

The United Nations has issued a strong statement regarding last year’s large-scale violence, protests, and deaths in Bangladesh, holding the government of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina responsible for the unrest and crimes against humanity.

For over seven months, Bangladesh has been engulfed in political turmoil and violence. In a recent development, the UN has accused Sheikh Hasina’s administration of being behind widespread atrocities during the protests. According to a UN report, approximately 1,400 protesters were killed in the unrest last year, with thousands more losing their lives. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that Sheikh Hasina fled the country in August 2024. Currently, Bangladesh’s interim government is seeking her extradition from India, though India has yet to decide on the matter.

UN Report Estimates 1,400 Protesters Killed

The UN investigation highlights that last year, protesters faced systematic attacks and extrajudicial killings, all orchestrated by Sheikh Hasina’s government. Citing an AFP report, the UN’s findings confirm that at least 1,400 protesters lost their lives during the violent crackdowns.

Sheikh Hasina Forced to Flee Bangladesh

The protests initially erupted over demands to abolish the controversial reservation system in government jobs, with student organizations playing a major role. However, the demonstrations escalated into widespread riots and violence. Amid growing calls for her removal, protesters stormed Sheikh Hasina’s residence, forcing her to flee the country.

Renewed Violence in Bangladesh

Even as the UN report surfaces, fresh violence has broken out in Bangladesh. Last week, the capital city of Dhaka witnessed arson and vandalism at the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding leader and Sheikh Hasina’s father.

The situation remains tense as the country grapples with ongoing political instability and demands for justice.
