Pahalgam Terror Attack: Pakistan Adopts Diversionary Tactics Amid Mounting Pressure from India and Global Criticism
In the aftermath of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan appears to be scrambling to deflect mounting international pressure and India’s swift retaliatory actions. Fearing economic and diplomatic sanctions, Pakistan has now called for an international investigation into the incident, a move many analysts believe is a tactic to shift global attention and avoid direct accountability.
According to a report by The New York Times, Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, has stated that the country is ready to fully cooperate with an international probe into the Pahalgam attack. He accused India of acting unilaterally by imposing punitive measures without conducting a proper investigation or presenting concrete evidence. Asif claimed that India is using the incident to further its domestic political interests and to undermine longstanding treaties, such as the Indus Water Treaty.
The Defence Minister also emphasized that Pakistan does not want the situation to escalate into a larger conflict, warning that any war between the two nuclear-armed nations could result in catastrophic consequences for the region. “We do not want this war to flare up because the outbreak of such a war can cause devastation in South Asia,” he stated.
In response to India’s allegations of Pakistan’s continued support to terrorist organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and The Resistance Front (TRF), both of which are believed to be behind the Pahalgam attack, Asif denied any such links. He insisted that “Lashkar-e-Taiba no longer exists,” and claimed to have never even heard of TRF, labeling it as an unfamiliar entity. He further added that Pakistan has itself been a victim of terrorism for decades and has consistently condemned acts of violence, including the recent Pahalgam incident.
Despite these denials, India remains firm in its stance. The Indian government has directly blamed Pakistan for sponsoring terrorism and has responded with a series of strong measures. These include the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and the downgrading of diplomatic ties with Islamabad. The Indian government has also ordered the Pakistani High Commissioner to leave the country within a week. In a further escalation, Pakistan retaliated by closing its airspace to Indian aircraft.
The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on April 22, saw terrorists associated with Pakistan-backed TRF brutally open fire on a group of unarmed tourists. Tragically, 26 innocent people lost their lives in the attack. This horrific incident has once again spotlighted the threat of cross-border terrorism and intensified calls for the international community to hold Pakistan accountable.
The Indian Army has been placed on high alert in the wake of the attack, with security measures tightened across Jammu and Kashmir. Officials are determined to ensure that such tragic incidents are not repeated and that those responsible face swift justice.
