Kamala Harris Rules Out 2026 California Governor Run, Hints at Possible 2028 Presidential Bid

Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has officially announced that she will not be contesting the 2026 California gubernatorial election. In a statement released on Wednesday (local time), Harris shared that she had spent the past six months deeply reflecting on how best to serve the nation and its people.

“I gave serious thought to running for governor of California,” Harris said. “I love my state and its people dearly, but I have decided not to enter the 2026 race.”

Her decision has reignited speculation about her political future—particularly regarding a potential run in the 2028 presidential election. After participating in two previous presidential bids, including as the Democratic nominee in 2024, which she lost to Donald Trump, many are now wondering if Harris is preparing for another shot at the presidency.

While Harris did not directly confirm any plans for 2028, she emphasized her continued commitment to public service. “Our politics and institutions are not meeting the expectations of the people,” she stated. “While I will not seek an elected office at this time, I will actively support Democratic leaders across the country and will soon share more about my future plans.”

A Political Legacy in California

Kamala Harris has a long and historic political career in California. Before becoming the nation’s first Black and South Asian Vice President, she served as California’s Attorney General and as the District Attorney of San Francisco. Her deep connection to the state made her a strong potential contender for the governor’s seat.

With Harris officially stepping away from the race, the field for the 2026 gubernatorial election is now wide open. Potential candidates include former Congresswoman Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and former U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra.

“The Real Power Lies With the People”

In closing her statement, Harris reflected on the broader democratic ideals she continues to champion. “The real power in America lies with the people,” she said. “We must keep fighting together—for justice, for equality, and for freedom. I remain committed to that fight.”
