IMF Technical Team Visits Pakistan to Assess Key Institutions
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) technical team has arrived in Pakistan to review the functioning of six critical institutions as part of the country’s $7 billion loan program. The assessment focuses on Pakistan’s judicial and regulatory mechanisms to address corruption and governance challenges.
IMF’s Review of Pakistan’s Regulatory and Judicial System
The IMF team will examine six key government areas, including financial governance, the central bank’s operations, and the rule of law. This initiative is part of the agreement signed between Pakistan and the IMF in October 2023, in which Pakistan committed to strengthening institutional capacities, ensuring fair business competition, and promoting inclusive growth.
Governance and Corruption Diagnosis Assessment (GCDA) Report
The Pakistani Finance Ministry announced on Sunday that the IMF team will conduct a week-long evaluation. A structured framework has been established for this review, culminating in the publication of the Governance and Corruption Diagnosis Assessment (GCDA) report by July 2025. This report will analyze governance and corruption issues and recommend improvements.
Meetings with Key Government Institutions
During the visit, the IMF mission will engage with top officials, including representatives from the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Finance Ministry, the Revenue Department, and the Election Commission of Pakistan. These interactions aim to evaluate the effectiveness of institutional processes.
Review of Six Key Government Sectors
The mission will assess six critical areas of Pakistan’s governance, including:
- Financial system management
- Central bank operations
- Financial sector supervision
- Market regulation
- Rule of law enforcement
- Efforts against money laundering and terrorism financing
The IMF team is scheduled to hold discussions with various governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Finance, Federal Board of Revenue, State Bank of Pakistan, Auditor General of Pakistan, Election Commission of Pakistan, and the Ministry of Law and Justice.
This visit is a crucial step in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to enhance governance, transparency, and economic stability under the IMF’s financial assistance program.
