SCO Summit 2025: India Proposes Four-Point Plan to Ease Border Tensions with China, Welcomes Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Resumption
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting held in Qingdao, China, India took a significant diplomatic step by presenting a four-point proposal to reduce ongoing border tensions with China. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, representing India at the summit, met with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, for high-level bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the conference.
During the meeting, India suggested a structured plan aimed at de-escalating tensions and fostering a more stable and peaceful relationship. The four key components of the plan include:
- Implementation of the 2024 Disengagement Plan – India urged China to move forward with the agreed disengagement strategies to ensure peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
- Active Efforts to Reduce Tensions – Emphasizing the need for restraint and clear communication, India encouraged confidence-building measures.
- Progress on Border Delimitation and Demarcation – India reiterated the importance of resolving boundary issues through well-defined demarcation and proper documentation processes.
- Utilizing the Special Representative Mechanism – India highlighted the need to reactivate and empower the existing Special Representative-level talks to explore new avenues for long-term peace and cooperation.
In addition to these strategic suggestions, Rajnath Singh warmly welcomed the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which has restarted after a nearly six-year suspension. This spiritual pilgrimage holds great religious significance for Hindus and is seen as a symbol of growing goodwill between the two nations.
Following the bilateral talks, Singh shared his views on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Had a cordial interaction with Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun during the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Qingdao. We exchanged constructive and forward-looking views on matters concerning bilateral relations. Expressed our happiness on the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after almost six years.” He also stressed the importance of both countries maintaining this positive momentum and avoiding any further complications that could damage diplomatic ties.
In a gesture of cultural diplomacy, Singh presented Admiral Dong Jun with a traditional Madhubani painting from Bihar. These vibrant artworks, originating from the Mithila region, are known for their intricate line work, bright colors, and symbolic tribal motifs, showcasing India’s rich artistic heritage.
Following the meeting, the Chinese side acknowledged India’s emphasis on peace and dialogue. A Chinese statement noted that India appears committed to resolving differences through communication and increasing mutual trust, signaling a possible thaw in recent border-related tensions.
This SCO summit marks a crucial moment in India-China relations, with diplomatic engagement and cultural exchange offering renewed hope for constructive bilateral progress.
