PM Modi Receives Warm Traditional Bihari Welcome in Mauritius with Geet Gawai
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand and traditional Bihari-style welcome during his two-day visit to Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. Upon his arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on Tuesday, PM Modi was welcomed by the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, along with around 200 dignitaries from the Mauritius government. This included the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, Foreign Minister, Cabinet Secretary, and other prominent leaders.
A special highlight of the welcome was the performance of the traditional Bhojpuri folk song, Geet Gawai, by a group of women. This cultural gesture reflected the deep-rooted historical and cultural connection between Mauritius and India. Women welcomed PM Modi by singing Geet Gawai, a traditional folk song associated with marriage ceremonies and celebrations in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This heartwarming gesture left a deep impression on the Prime Minister.
Geet Gawai: A Symbol of Cultural Heritage
The Geet Gawai tradition holds a significant place in the Bhojpuri cultural heritage. Recognizing its cultural importance, Geet Gawai was included in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2016. This traditional art form is primarily associated with marriage rituals and community celebrations, particularly in the Bhojpuri-speaking regions.
During his welcome, PM Modi was visibly delighted by the traditional Geet Gawai. The cultural performance demonstrated the strong Indian roots that still thrive in Mauritius, showcasing how generations have preserved their traditions and culture over centuries.
PM Modi Expresses Gratitude for the Memorable Welcome
After the grand welcome at the airport, PM Modi proceeded to his hotel, where he was again greeted warmly by the Indian community in Mauritius. People enthusiastically waved the tricolor and raised slogans of Bharat Mata Ki Jai, expressing their admiration and love for the Prime Minister of India.
Deeply moved by the warm reception, PM Modi expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, “I am overwhelmed by the heartfelt welcome extended by the Indian community in Mauritius. Their deep connection with Indian traditions, culture, and values is truly inspiring. This connection has flourished over generations through history and hearts.”
He further added, “The welcome I received in Mauritius is unforgettable. The rendition of Geet Gawai showcased our deep cultural bond, and it is commendable how Bhojpuri language and culture have thrived in Mauritius.”
A Symbol of Strong India-Mauritius Ties
PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius aimed to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two nations. The warm and culturally rich welcome demonstrated the strong people-to-people connection between India and Mauritius. The traditional Geet Gawai performance was a beautiful reminder of the shared cultural heritage that unites the two countries.
PM Modi’s visit marks another milestone in strengthening India-Mauritius relations, with both countries showing a deep appreciation for each other’s culture, heritage, and values.
