PM Modi: “The Future Lies in Buddha, Not War,” at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conference

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the path to the future is through peace, invoking the teachings of Buddha, during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conference held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Addressing the attendees, he highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Odisha, noting its historical significance and ongoing traditions, such as the Bali Yatra, which celebrates the ancient maritime trade of Odishan merchants to regions like Bali, Sumatra, and Java.

In his address, PM Modi reflected on the peaceful legacy of Emperor Ashoka, who renounced violence in favor of peace after the Kalinga War. Modi urged that the world should draw inspiration from such heritage, stating, “The future is not in war, but in Buddha.”

Prime Minister Modi praised the Indian diaspora as ambassadors of India’s rich culture and democracy. He expressed his pride in their ability to integrate into societies worldwide while maintaining respect for local customs and traditions. He highlighted the significant contributions of the diaspora in building positive relations and enhancing India’s image globally.

PM Modi also spoke of India’s growing stature in the world, mentioning the country’s achievements in space exploration, such as Chandrayaan’s success at Shiv Shakti Point, and the impressive advancements in Digital India. He emphasized India’s role as a strong voice for the Global South, asserting that today’s India confidently presents its perspectives on the global stage.

During the event, the Prime Minister flagged off the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Express,’ a special tourist train aimed at providing NRIs a glimpse of India’s diverse cultural and religious landmarks. The train, starting its journey from Delhi’s Nizamuddin Railway Station, will traverse various destinations over three weeks.

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the importance of the biennial Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conference, which allows overseas Indians to witness India’s progress and development firsthand. He acknowledged the growing global recognition of India’s achievements and the increasing importance of the diaspora in a connected world.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reiterated the theme of the conference, “Contribution of NRIs in Building a Developed India,” and extended a warm welcome to all attendees, highlighting the role of NRIs in shaping a prosperous future for India.

This gathering celebrated the achievements and contributions of the Indian diaspora, reinforcing their vital role in India’s development and global influence.
