US Immigrant Population Declines Amid Trump’s Tough Policies; Experts Warn of Economic Impact

US President Donald Trump’s firm stance on immigration has led to significant changes in the country’s immigrant population. During his administration, strict measures were implemented, including large-scale deportations of undocumented immigrants and heightened border enforcement. These tough policies are now showing tangible effects, with a noticeable decline in the number of immigrants residing in the United States.

According to a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, the immigrant population in the US decreased by approximately 1.5 million between January 2025 and June 2025. At the beginning of this year, the total number of immigrants in the country was estimated at 53.3 million, but it has now dropped to around 51.9 million, the report revealed on Thursday.

Jeffrey Passel, senior demographer at the Pew Research Center, told the media, “The data we are observing shows a dramatic change in immigration trends.” This reduction in immigrant numbers is not only demographic but also economic, impacting the US labor market significantly. The Pew Research Center report notes that the workforce has lost over 750,000 workers as a result of this decline in immigrants.

Passel added, “The working-age population in the United States is not growing. This means that the only way to expand the workforce is through the arrival of new immigrants. Without growth in the workforce, the economy could face serious challenges.”

Experts warn that unless immigration trends shift, the continued decline in the immigrant population could lead to long-term repercussions for the US economy, affecting everything from labor availability to overall economic growth.
