India Squad for Champions Trophy 2025 Announced: Rohit Sharma to Captain, Shami Returns, Siraj Omitted
The Indian squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy has been revealed, with Rohit Sharma set to lead the team. The tournament will begin on February 19, and India will play all their matches in Dubai. The squad also includes fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. The 15-member Indian team was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group, and their highly anticipated match will take place in Dubai on February 23. India will start their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by matches against Pakistan and New Zealand on March 2. The final will be held on March 9.
Notable Absentees: Siraj, Samson, and Reddy Left Out
While the team has some familiar faces, certain players were left out. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounder Nitish Reddy did not make the cut for the Champions Trophy squad. Siraj, who was part of the T20 World Cup team last year, was notably absent from the Champions Trophy selection.
Shubman Gill Named Vice-Captain
Shubman Gill has been named the vice-captain of the Indian team for both the ODI series and the Champions Trophy. He was also part of India’s squad in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The selectors have mainly retained players from the World Cup squad, with a few new faces such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, and Washington Sundar being added to the lineup.
Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah Included
Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who missed the Australia tour due to injury, is back in the squad for the Champions Trophy. Also included is star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who had been sidelined due to injury during the fifth Test against Australia. However, Bumrah has not been selected for the ODI series against England ahead of the Champions Trophy. In his place, Harshit Rana has been added to the squad for the series.
