Indian Navy: “India is Becoming a Major Maritime Power,” Says PM Modi at Warship Launch

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India is gaining recognition as a major maritime power during the induction of three naval warships, INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vagsheer, into the Indian Navy. The event, held at the naval dock, marked a historic moment for the nation’s naval capabilities. PM Modi emphasized that India is regarded as a reliable and responsible partner globally, particularly in the Global South, and operates with a spirit of development rather than expansionism.

PM Modi highlighted the significance of January 15, celebrated as Army Day, and saluted the brave soldiers dedicated to the nation’s protection. He also acknowledged the day as monumental for India’s maritime heritage and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Referring to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy in naval strength, he noted that commissioning a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine simultaneously for the first time, all “Made in India,” is a source of national pride.

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to a free, safe, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region and outlined the government’s continuous reforms aimed at enhancing India’s military capabilities across all domains—land, sea, air, and space. He emphasized the importance of modernizing the military to secure the nation’s interests everywhere and to play a pivotal role in shaping global security, economy, and geopolitics.

PM Modi stressed the strategic importance of protecting coastal areas, ensuring freedom of navigation, and securing trade routes from threats like drugs, weapons, and terrorism. He called for India to become a global leader in maritime security.

INS Surat: A World-Class Destroyer INS Surat is the fourth ship of the 15B class guided missile destroyer project, featuring 75% indigenous content. INS Nilgiri: Advanced Stealth Frigate The first ship of the 17A stealth frigate project, INS Nilgiri, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, is equipped with enhanced capabilities for extended sea missions and advanced stealth features. It represents a new generation of indigenous frigates.

INS Vagsheer: Collaborative Submarine Expertise INS Vagsheer, the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene project, underscores India’s growing expertise in submarine construction, developed in collaboration with France’s Naval Group. This addition marks a significant step in advancing India’s submarine fleet.
